The Brecon
Beacons Park Society is offering a series of two-day courses, which cover the
basics of navigation for hill walkers;
from understanding maps and using a compass to more advanced skills such as GPS
potential and relocation strategies.
GET LOST!
A two-day basic navigation course
Based,
in the ‘Lesser Hall’, upstairs at the Abercrave Miners’ Welfare, just off
the A4067. Grid reference: SN 815127
Designed to test and improve basic navigational skills, the
course will cover: map symbols, hand-railing, taking and walking on compass
bearings, distance measurement and detailed route planning . Partially based indoors, most of the experience will be
practical and will involve walking into the surrounding hills. As well as being of benefit
to mountain walkers, it should be a useful introduction/refresher for those
wishing to go on and obtain
more advanced navigation qualifications.
Participants will need to bring: OS Explorer OL 12 map, base-plate mounted compass, small
ruler showing millimetres, note-pad and pen, torch, whistle, packed lunch, waterproofs,
warm clothing and walking boots.

Abercrave is situated just off the A 4067
in the Upper Swansea Valley, about halfway between Swansea and Brecon

Approaching Abercrave (Abercraf)
from the south, turn left off the A 4067 signposted to the village. Up the hill,
turn first left just before the Post Office on Heol Tawe and look for a large
detached building on the right hand side. Park around the back. the 'Lesser
Hall' is upstairs on your left as you enter the front of building.
GET LOST AGAIN!
A two-day more advanced navigation course
Based,
in the ‘Lesser Hall’, upstairs at the Abercrave Miners’ Welfare, just off
the A4067. Grid reference: SN 815127
Designed as a follow-up to ‘Get Lost!’, this more detailed and
intensive
course will
cover: map interpretation and comparison, micro-navigation, relocation
strategies, contour navigation, using a GPS and night navigation. Partially
based indoors, most of the experience will be practical and will
involve walking into the surrounding hills.
Participants
will need to bring: OS Explorer OL 12 map, base-plate mounted compass, small
ruler showing millimetres, note-pad and pen, torch, whistle, packed lunch,
waterproofs, warm clothing and walking boots.

A two-day basic navigation course
From 10.00am to 5.00pm Saturday
and Sunday.
GET LOST AGAIN - Saturday
23rd October and Sunday 24th October
A two-day more advanced navigation course
From 10.00am to 5.00pm Saturday and
2.00pm to 10.00pm Sunday.
The Get Lost Course is limited to 10 places and the Get Lost Again to 8 places. These usually get filled up some time in advance so it is essential to check for availability and to reserve a place on the course as early as possible

The cost of either course is £20 per person for Members of the Society or £30 per person for Non-Members. The balance of £20 per person to be paid on the first day of the course to cover room hire, administration and the provision of tea and coffee. Any surplus will go to Park Society funds. Members should provide their Membership Number (Family Membership and Under 18 applies) when booking. Non-Members need to send a non-refundable cheque for £10 for each person made out to “The Brecon Beacons Park Society” and sent to:
