Several members have reserved to attend this bat watch, joining David Jermyn from the Vincent Wildlife Trust, to observe a large colony of lesser horseshoe bats emerge from an internationally important roost in the Upper Usk Valley, near Bwlch. Meet in the lay by just off the A40, GR SO 127227, at 8.30pm (not 8pm as originally advertised) on Monday 21 May, weather permitting. We will car share the short distance to the bat roost, to be in place by sunset.

Attendees, please bring suitable clothing, torches and insect repellent.

The beautiful Llanthony valley has inspired artists for hundreds of years. This talk by William Gibbs is illustrated with over 130 images of the works of many artists who have either lived in or visited the valley.

National Park heritage gems sought for Local List

Residents in the Brecon Beacons National Park are invited to nominate unprotected buildings, monuments and other assets that add to the heritage of the area, to help ensure their long term future and protection.

The Local List is intended to catalogue and recognise these assets so they can be properly considered when development proposals are submitted to the National Park Authority, so assisting the planning process. Although there will be no direct additional requirements over properties that are included on the Local List, the NPA will encourage owners to preserve the special qualities that have resulted in their inclusion, and will promote restoration where there is good evidence.

Data collection starts now for the Talgarth and Brecon areas, Crickhowell and Hay-on-Wye to follow in September, the west of the Park in December 2012, the east in February 2013.

Five Park Society walk leaders have recently taken the Walking Group Leader assessment and have passed with flying colours – congratulations to Frank Cook, Steve Flynn, Frank Scott, Rob Short and Gerry Smith. Very well done to them all!

Park Society Recipe Book to raise funds for Brecon Mountain Rescue

It became clear at the recent excellent Society evening talk from Duncan Forbes of Brecon Mountain Rescue (BMR) that they need more funds to replace their control vehicle, written off in a collision during a call out, total cost £65,000 to replace – see http://www.breconmrt.co.uk/2011/09/control-vehicle-destroyed/ A control vehicle is vital in coordinating rescues across South & Mid Wales.

BBPS is planning to raise money for BMR through sales of a booklet of recipes (contributed by members) for things to eat on a walk and easy but satisfying meals for afterwards.

Park Society AGM, and day out, Sat 16 June, 2012, 10.30 – 16.30 (plus evening stroll & barbecue)

All Brecon Beacons Park Society members are welcome at the Society’s AGM on Saturday 16 June, 2012, at Myddfai Community Hall.

Proceedings to begin at 10.30am, with coffee and biscuits, then the formal AGM, followed by a welcome from Hugh Davies of the Myddfai Community Hall Committee, then lunch.

The afternoon starts with a talk by Lara Phillips, a local medical herbalist (celebrating the local legends of the Physicians of Myddfai), then a choice between two walks, one to see the herbs in the wild, one longer walk with another local resident, Justin Lewis.

Tea and biscuits available after the walks.

There will be a charge for the day’s refreshments, book with the formal notice of the AGM, to be circulated towards the end of May.

For those interested, to round off the day, there will be a walk around Pen Arthur Wood, about 20mins from Myddfai, with barbecue (bring own food & drink), also a Russian-style sauna and spring-fed plunge pool for the brave-hearted!

3 Peaks of Wales fundraising event Saturday 30 June 2012

For anyone interested in fundraising for the St David’s Foundation Hospice Care, information about this and other events are on their website www.stdavidsfoundation.co.uk.

On Saturday 30 June they are looking for teams of 5, four walkers and one driver preferably. Registration will be in Llanberis Fri 29 June, ready for a very early start Saturday. The peaks are Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen Y Fan, all in one day.

Entry £25 per team; Foundation then requesting team sponsorship minimum £500.
