THE EPYNT WAY
Since the 1930's the Army has
occupied most of the Northern half of the Epynt lying between the Ifon, Wye and
Usk valleys, to the west of the Crychan Forest.
>From 2002 the MOD, together with the Ramblers Association and local residents,
have been opening up the Epynt Way (mostly lying inside the edge of the MOD
land).
In October 2004 the first two phases were opened to the public, from Disgwylfa
round to Esgair Wen, which the Park Society have walked several times
More guided walks along the Way will be offered as and when new section are
opened to the public.
Maps of the Epynt Way can be obtained from John Clifford on: 01874 635511 or go
to: www.defence-estates.mod.uk/epyntway
More details of future Park Society Guided Walks along the route from: 01874 623404 MIKE
SCOTT ARCHER.
The Epynt Way team were awarded the Silver Otter Award for outstanding
contributions to conservation, public access and heritage on MOD Estates, which
was presented by the Under Secretary of State for Defence in October 2005.
ANOTHER ICELANDIC SAGA
THE EASTFJORDS – THE TRAILS OF THE DESERTED INLETS
|
Members may be interested in accompanying Park Society Executive member Clive Eiles on a further walking holiday to the Eastfjords, in the south east corner of Iceland. This used to be inhabited, with small farms where people earned their living from the land and the sea. The scenery is spectacular – sharp often rocky mountains, small bays and inlets, meadows, and lakes. Bird and plant life are rich, and reindeer are not unknown. There are also supernatural sites! |

There will be ten days of walking,
staying at six different locations, with two, two night stays and one
three night stay. You will have to carry your own clothing and personal
things, but food will be transported. Cooking will be communal but depending on the exact itinerary, meals may be provided at one location. |
|
Accommodation will be in simple mountain huts, a house in a small fishing village, a farm, or an abandoned farm. Except for the stay of 3 nights you may expect to share the accommodation with others
|

The walking will be varied – sometimes on broad tracks, sometimes through mountain passes, but nothing will be more strenuous than in this country. The trek is likely to take place during late July into early August 2008, to coincide with the long daylight hours. Participants may want to arrive in Iceland earlier or leave later in order to sight-see.
|
An indicative cost for the trip, London to London is £900. The trip will be led by Clive Eiles, who led a similar trek in 2006, and has travelled in Iceland for many years. For
more details, including dates and itinerary, contact Clive at: |
