FFOREST FAWR GEOPARK FESTIVAL

The Society is supporting this festival by leading walks on the 5th and 7th June
(and through previous walks in the Spring Programme). 

Friday 5th June
..... Fforest Fawr GeoPark Festival
CWM, CRAIG, PEN AND CEFN. 10.00am - 4.30pm  11.2km (7 miles) 640m ascent Moderate/Energetic
Park in Nant Cwm Llwch GR SO 006244, at the end of the minor road ( Ffrwdgrech Road ) turning south off the B4601 in Brecon - no access from the A40.  A great landscape carved by glaciers out of the Old Red Sandstone.  Route – Llyn Cwm Llwch, Craig Cwm Llwch, Corn Du, Pen y Fan, Cefn Cwm Llwch and Allt Ddu, returning to Cwm Llwch by quiet lanes.

Saturday 6th June ..... Beyond the Park
EXPLORE THE LOWER MYNYDD EPYNT ..... AGAIN. 9.30am - 4.30pm 22 km (14 miles) Moderate/Energetic
From the village hall in Llanfihangel-nant-Bran 9 miles north west of Brecon GR SN 944343 (car parking £1).
Another variation on previous walks in this lovely but little known area. The route uses the Epynt Way to join the ridges on either side of the Bran and Cilieni valleys providing wonderful views across the National Park.

Sunday 7th June..... Fforest Fawr GeoPark Festival
TRAMWAYS, FANS, HOLES AND PAVEMENTS. 10.00am - 6.00pm 23km (14.4 miles) Strenuous
A walk in the Geopark looking at how geological processes shaped the landscape and determined the agricultural and industrial heritage of the area.  From Penwyllt car park GR SN 855155, to Pwll Byfre, Fan Gyhirych, Fan Nedd, the Afon Llia, Sarn Helen, the Nedd Fechan and through the Ogof-Ffynon Ddu National Nature Reserve.
No dogs please.

Friday 12th June
PEN Y FAN CIRCUIT. 10.00am - 4.30pm 14km (9 miles) Energetic
Met at the Blaen Taf Fechan Forestry Commission car park GR SO 037170 (not marked as a car park on the OS map). There is a short steep climb up onto the ridge above the Neuadd reservoir then easy walking over Corn Du and Pen y Fan. Returning via Cribyn and the Roman road (2200ft of ascent).

To be held at Ty Mawr Lime Ltd, the Welsh Centre for Traditional and Ecological Building at Llangasty by Llangorse lake.

From Ty Mawr Farm GR SO124260 we will wander through the flower rich meadows beside the lake to Llangasty Church and then the gardens at Treberfydd. Those requiring something more energetic can return via Allt yr Esgair.

Meet at the Craft Centre Car Park, Erwood on B4567 south of Aberedw GR SO 090440. A stunning walk on good paths and tracks with wonderful views of surrounding mountains all day (weather permitting!). There will be an opportunity to buy tea and cakes at the craft centre on our return

LLANGATTOCK - USK VALLEY WALK AND MONMOUTHSHIRE AND BRECON CANAL. 10.00am - 3.00pm 11km (7 miles)  Moderate      
From the road opposite The Horseshoe Inn, Llangattock  GR SO 212177
. A gentle walk  through Llangattock Common and along the valley side with fine views.

Saturday 20th June
AROUND AND ABOVE BRYNAMMAN - ROB'S WAY. 9.30am - 5.30pm 19km (12 miles) Strenuous
Meet at the Community Centre Car Park Brynamman (GR SN 714142) on the mini roundabout (across the road, lower car park). Meandering through lanes
and farmland before climbing up on to the Black m

Mountain, with spectacular views of Brynamman on one side, and the Towy valley on the other. Traverse the mountain, taking in cairns, waterfalls and old settlements before returning via an old track. 
This is in the Wild West of the National Park, with very few paths, and very boggy in places.

BLORENGE LANDSCAPE 10.30am - 3.30pm 10 km (6 miles) Moderate
From the car park on the B4246 at Llanfoist GR SO 286133. Up the incline, around to the Punch Bowl and descending through woods and farmland 
to return along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, looking at some of the industrial, historical, geomorphological and natural features that make up 
the landscape on the east of the Blorenge.

YSTRADFELLTE RESERVOIR AND THE FANS. 9.30am - 5.30pm 24km (15miles) Strenuous
Park (free) in the car park in the centre of the village, GR SN 929134. A walk from the village of Ystradfellte, along the country lanes and pathways to Ystradfellte Reservoir, a climb up to Fan Fawr and then Fan Frynach, Fan Dringarth, Fan Llia and returning over Carnau Gwynion.

BEACONS WAY DAY 3: CRICKHOWELL TO LLANGYNIDR.
9.00am - 5.00pm 20km (12.5 miles) Energetic
The late John Sansom was a founder member of the Society. He was its Hon. Sec., and originator of the Guided Walks Programme. An outstanding walk leader, his was the inspiration behind the successful launch of the Beacons Way. In this 10th anniversary year of the programme this linear walk will mark his unique contribution to the Society. Meet at Llangynidr Village Hall car park, GR SO156196, for car sharing to start.

Friday 3rd July ..... Walk with the Wardens
THE BEACONS CIRCUIT.
9.00am - 5.00pm 16km (10 miles) Energetic
Meet at the Storey Arms car park GR SN 982203. The high summits of the Central Beacons are climbed on this circular walk passing the Tommy Jones memorial obelisk, Neuadd reservoirs and Craig Fan Ddu.

Saturday 4th July..... Past the Park

LONG MYND.  8.15am -  17.10pm  28km (17 miles) and approx 750M of ascent STRENUOUS   
Meet at Abergavenny Railway Station at 8.15am for 8.28am train to Church Stretton. Park at
Station (fee) or in nearby streets. Groupsave fares, 25% off, can apply per 4 passengers. The walk first climbs Ragleth Hill and then crosses and recrosses the Mynd via Pole Bank, Bridges, Ratlinghope, Betchcott Hills and the Portway. Return train at 17.10. Best to contact the leader in advance as train times may change.

Sunday 5th July

WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACK. 9.30am - 4.00pm 25km (15.5miles) and 2400 ft ascent Energetic 
From Pen y Fan Pond, Blackwood; Exp166 GR SO199006. Walking at a brisk pace towards the Beacons but not quite getting there. The route follows the Sirhowy Valley and Ebbw Valley Walks, with spectacular views of both valleys, a glimpse of one Pen y Fan, (weather allowing) before walking back to the other.

THE LLANBEDR HORSESHOE. 9.30am - 6.00pm 27km (17 miles) Strenuous
From Ty Mawr farm north-west of Llanbedr GR SO 234206 (parking fee). A high level circuit of the Grwyne Fechan valley: Pen Cerrig-calch, Pen Allt-Mawr, Pen Trumau, Waun Fach (811m), Pen y Gadair Fawr and Crug Mawr.

WAUN FACH - THE LITTLE MOOR. 10.00am - 4.00pm 20km (12.5 miles) Energetic  
Meet in Talgarth car park (free) GR SO 153336. Through Pwll-y-wrach nature reserve and over the fields to ascend the scarp to Y Das. Ascend Waun Fach and return via Mynydd Llysiau, Y Grib, and the gliding club field.
 
(Why not travel by bus? Talgarth is on route #39. A bus suitable leaves Hereford at 08:40 or Brecon at 09:10. Return to Hereford at 16.28 and Brecon at 17.17.)

STROLLING STONES. 10.00am - 4.00pm 16km (10 miles) Moderate
Meet at lay-bye off Junction 2 of M48 ( Chepstow ) at 08.45am. Car share to Avebury for a walk across a prehistoric landscape to a White Horse and return via West Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill to enjoy the museum and tearoom at Avebury prior to returning to Chepstow for approx 18.00pm.

DAN'S WALK TO THE GROTTO AND FOLLY. 10.00am - 4.30pm 19km (12 miles)  Moderate  
Meet at the car park in Penperlleni just off the A4042,  GR SO 322046, for a walk across fields through Pontypool Park to visit the Shell Grotto and climb the Folly Tower then back through the little-known part of the National Park.

NANT BWLCH FROM GRWYNE FAWR. 10.00am - 4.00pm 17km (10.5 miles) Moderate/Energetic
Starting at Blaen y Cwm car park GR SO 252284, up over the ridge via the Blacksmith's Anvil and down (steeply) to Capel-y-Ffin. Then up the picturesque Nant Bwlch valley to the north ridge of the Black Mountains. Returning via Rhos Dirion and the Grwyne Fawr dam.

From the Tafarn y Garreg at GR SN 849 171. A walk to
Castell y Geifr, Carreg Goch and the Wellington, Disgwylfa, and Sinc y Giedd, then into the wilderness and up to Bwlch y Giedd, and return to the Tafarn by Fan Hir.

A CLASSIC TRAVERSE OF THE BEACONS.
9.30am - 5.00pm 16 km (10 miles) Energetic.  
Meet at the car park below Talybont Reservoir dam GR SO 105208 for pick up by mini bus (fare required). A linear walk from the Storey Arms over the tops of Corn Du, Pen-y-Fan, Cribyn, Fan-y-Big, Craig Cwareli, Waun Rydd and Carn Pica to the Talybont reservoir. Saturday 1st August
NANT SALI MORRIS - DI'S WAY. 9.30am - 5.30 pm 19km (12 miles) Strenuous
Meet at the car park at the top of the Black Mountain on the A4069 (GR SN 733188) (NOT the one with the viewpoint). 
Follow the Beacons Way from Garreg Llwyd to Carn Pica, and then the funeral route to Nant Sali Morris. This walk is in the Wild West of the National Park, with very few paths. Boggy and rocky in places. If the weather is good we will be rewarded with spectacular views.

From Pont Cadwgan, GR SO 267252, climb up through Mynydd-Du forest onto Disgwylfa ridge along to Pen-y-Gadair Fawr
. Down the forest edge by the waterfalls (steep) crossover the valley at Grwyne Fawr climb to just below the ridge and return back along grass tracks

A walk in the Fforest Fawr Geopark looking at the role of geological processes in shaping the landscape.
From Penwyllt car park GR SN 855155.  Through the Ogof-Ffynon Ddu National Nature Reserve to the Nedd Fechan, along Sarn Helen to the Afon Llia, then over Fan Nedd and Fan Gyhirych. Returning along tramroads to Pwll Byfre and Penwyllt.

Tsunami or Tidal Surge
EXPLORE THE GLAMORGAN HERITAGE COAST
9.30am - 5.30pm  19km  (12 miles)  Energetic  
Meet on the beach car park at Ogmore-on-Sea (parking fee) GR SS 862755 followed by car share to Col-huw beach Llantwit Major. A cliff and beach walk along the Heritage Coast, then across Ogmore Down to Ogmore castle (and a cream tea!), exploring the geology and history, sometimes bloody, of this coast. Beach walking can be rough underfoot.

From the Crickhowell High School car park along the Usk Valley Walk then round Cwm Onneu, up to Mynydd Llangatwg crossing some open land and down to Llangatwg.

TWRCH Y TROT. 9.30am - 5.30pm 19km (12 miles) Strenuous
From the Water Board Car Park at GR SN 799 238. Take the unclassified road which runs from Trecastle to the A 4069 between Llangadog and Brynaman.  Follow signs to Llanddeusant, the Youth Hostel and Llyn y Fan Fach. A route down the head waters of the Twrch, and then back via the Bronze Age Burial Cairns on Carreg Las.

NOT THE BEACONS WAY. 9.30am - 4.00pm 18km (11 miles) Energetic
Meet at the Blaen-y-Glyn car park GR SO 056176. Another chance to follow the route that didn’t get included in the Beacons Way , up a beautiful but less well known valley beside the waterfalls of Nant Caerfanell to Blaen y Glyn, then a circuit of the Beacons escarpment and return along the Taff Trail.

Friday 21st August
FOLLY, BOMBER AND GOOSE AND CUCKOO. 10.00am - 4.30pm 18km (11 miles) Energetic
Meet at the Pontypool Leisure Centre car park GR SO 285006 for a walk in the extreme south east of the park. Visiting the shell grotto and the folly and continuing on hillside and through the woods to the Goose and Cuckoo for the lunch stop (please let the leader know if you would like lunch in the pub so we can give them advanced warning). Returning via Mynydd Garnclochdy and Mynydd Garn-wen.

Saturday 22nd August ..... North of the Park

PAINSCASTLE - ROLLING HILLS OF RHULEN, LLANDEILO AND GLASCWM. 9.30am - 5.00pm 24km (15 Miles) or thereabouts Energetic  
Because of shortage of parking in Painscastle, we will meet at the carpark in The Begwyns GR SO 163447 and ferry walkers from there (this is not marked as a carpark on OS map but is on the road which runs from Clyro to Painscastle,  near the northern cattle grid just as you exit - or enter - the Begwyns). A walk in rolling hills mostly unexplored by us.

Mourne Way ( 26 miles )& Lecale Way  ( 40 miles )                   

The Mourne Way is from Newcastle to Carlingford Lough over the Mountains of Mourne whereas the Lecale Way is from Strangford Lough to Newcastle along the County Down coast. The obvious place to stay is Newcastle.

Sunday 23rd August..... History Revealed
AN EXPLORATION OF HATTERRALL HILL. 10.00am - 4.30pm 16km (10 miles) Energetic 
From the large lay by at Stanton, just off the Llanthony Valley road GR SN 310217. An ascent of Hatterrall Hill via the hill fort followed by a tramp through the heather looking for the stone circle on the top of the hill. Return via Cwmyoy Church and Twyn y Gaer Hill Fort.

Friday 28th August
A CATS BACK RAMBLE. 11.00am - 3.00pm 12 km (8 miles) Moderate
Meet at the Black Hill picnic area, 7km NW of Longtown at GR SO 288328 for a classic Black Mountains ridge ramble. Up the narrow crest of the Cat's Back, with great views on either side, to Black Hill, then over to Offa's Dyke Path and on to Hay Bluff for its terrific panoramic outlook. Returning via the Olchon Valley and some pretty little waterfalls.

TRIPLE PEN TRIANGLE. 10.00am - 4.00pm 17km (11 miles) Energetic
From Crickhowell High School, New Road, Crickhowell, GR SO 217185, a hike in the Black Mountains with varied scenery and sweeping views. Up Cwm Cumbeth and on around the head of Cwm-gu to Pen Gloch-y-Pibwr, around the head of Cwm Nantygarreg to Pen Allt-mawr, and above the side of Cwm Banw to Pen Cerrig-calch.  Descent to Crickhowell with Table Mountain as a bonus.

SUGAR LOAF AND CRUG MAWR. 9.30am - 4.30pm 18.5km (11.5 miles) Energetic
From the Fro car park on the minor road between Bettws and Forest Coal Pit GR SO 292200. Taking the "back" way up the Sugar Loaf, descending via Mynydd Pen-y-fal to the confluence of the Grwyne rivers, over Crug Mawr to Partrishow church, and crossing the Grwyne valley once more on our return.
