CRICKHOWELL WALKING FESTIVAL

A  WEEK OF WALKS IN THE EAST, from Saturday 1st March (St David's Day) to Sunday 9th March inclusive.   
This part of our programme is the Society's contribution to the Crickhowell Walking Festival. The walks also appear in the Walking Festival programme where in some cases the walk descriptions have been changed slightly to make them more understandable for a wider audience.

Saturday 1st March
FROM PRIORY TO CRUG. 9.00am - 5.00pm 20.5km (12.7 miles) 961m of ascent (3152ft) Strenuous
A high level walk from Llanthony Priory to Crickhowell following the route of the second stage of the Beacons Way, via Garn Wen, Partrishow Church, Crug Mawr and Table Mountain. Park (free) in Crickhowell High School car park (Grid ref: SO 216185) and meet at 9.00am at the Crickhowell Resource and Information Centre for transport by bus to Llanthony Priory.

AROUND AND OVER MYNYDD LLANGATWG.

From the Crickhowell Resource and Information Centre GR SO 218183, a gradual climb to the eastern side of Mynydd Llangatwg and returning back over the top and Llangattock escarpment.

Tuesday 4th March
BEACONS WAY TO DYFFRYN CRAWNON. 9.30am - 3.00pm 15km (9.5 miles) Moderate
From the car park of the Coach and Horses Public House, Llangynidr GR SO 146199. We follow a scenic stretch of the Beacons Way along the northern slopes of Dyffryn Crawnon below Tor y Foel, to gain a view of Talybont Reservoir, take the Brinore Tramroad as far as the Nye Bevan memorial stone, then across the moorland and down through fields to complete the circuit of Dyffryn Crawnon.

Meet at the Crickhowell Resource and Information Centre, GR SO 218183, for transport by bus to the start of the walk. A linear walk from Pengenfordd via Castell Dinas and the tops of Waun Fach (811m), Mynydd Llysiau, Pen Allt-mawr, Pen Cerrig-calch and Crug Hywel back to Crickhowell.

A CLASSIC WALK AROUND LLANTHONY. 10.00am - 5.00pm 16.5km (10.3 miles) Energetic
From the car park at Llanthony Priory GR SO 288278. A high level circuit of the Ewyas Valley via the beer trail to Offas' Dyke Path, down via Upper Pentwyn , up the other side to skirt the Gaer and then north along the ridge to descend via Cwm Bwchel.

TWO RIDGES ASTRIDE THE GRWYNE FAWR.

From Pont Cadwgan GR SO 267252.  North via Bal Mawr and Chwarel y Fan, descending to cross the river near Blaen y Cwm, then up to Pen y Gadair Fawr (800m), returning south via Pen Twyn Mawr and Disgwylfa.

HILLS, WATERFALLS AND HISTORIC SITES - OLD AND NEW. 9.30am - 5.00pm 19km (12 miles) Energetic
From the car park by the bridge over the Usk at GR SN820272. Up to the trig point on Mynydd Myddfai with spectacular views over the Towy Valley.  Look at the site of the pipeline before returning along the Bridle way to cross the road on to Mynydd Llan, to see Roman Camps, Stone Circles, Crash Sites and waterfalls.

From the lay by car park on the B4521 GR SO 328164 the walk takes a classic route up and round the Skirrid (Ysgyryd Fawr) visiting a secret tea break picnic spot, the site of the ancient chapel on the summit,  "The Devils Table" and with luck a spectacular show of bluebells.

A choice of three walks with the theme of 'Conservation in the Park':  

(1) A CLASSIC OUTING IN THE CENTRAL BEACONS 10.00am - 4.00pm 8km (5 miles) Moderate
Meet at the car park opposite the Storey Arms on the A 470 Grid Reference SN 982203. A  walk taking in some of the most popular summits of the Central Beacons including Corn Du and Pen y Fan, with thoughts from the landowners, the National Trust, on how they try to preserve the landscape in the face of large visitor numbers, erosion etc.

(2) A FRESH VIEW OF WAUN FIGNEN FELEN.

From car park at Craig-y-nos Country Park visitor centre Grid Reference SN 840155 (parking fee required).  Up Cwm Haffes to look at the peat bog known as Waun Fignen Felen and its surroundings.  A chance to see sundew, bog asphodel, lousewort, and other acid-loving moor-land plants, and to view the interesting landscape features of Sgwd Ddu, sink holes, shake holes and the Dead Dog cave entrance.  Discussion of the work on conservation and attempted revegetation of a unique and historic peat bog, with National Park Officers who are responsible for the management of the area.  Easy gradients but some rough walking.

BALANCING A HISTORIC POST INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE AND CONSERVATION. 10.00am - 4.00pm 16km (10 miles) Moderate  
From the Keepers' Pond car park on the B4246 Abergavenny - Blaenafon road GR SO 254107. A walk to explore the historic landscape of the World Heritage Site above Blaenafon, which includes the Canada Tips, the Dyne Steel incline and the lost village of Pwll Du. This will be followed by a walk round The Blorenge with its evidence of early industrial work but now a SSSI. Easy gradients but rough in places.

A choice of two guided walks in the eastern area of the National Park

(1) TO THE TOP OF THE TABLE
9.30am - 12.30pm 9km (6 miles) Moderate
Starting from the public car park in Crickhowell (off the A40 behind the fire station) Grid Reference: SO 219184. A classic walk to Table Mountain with its commanding presence above Crickhowell and its sweeping views of the Usk valley. With varied scenery, the walk crosses green meadows, open moors and a wooded valley. This is one of a series of 'self-guided' walks which have been published on the Brecon Beacons Park Society web-site.

Wednesday 23rd April ..... Illustrated Archaeological Lecture   
ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEYS OF THE SOUTHEAST BLACK MOUNTAINS.
7.30pm at the Bear Hotel, Crickhowell         
Two archaeology surveys have recently been completed in the Black Mountains for the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales' Upland Initiative Scheme by ArchaeoPhysica and Trysor. These walking surveys covered 60 km2 making a total record of archaeological remains above 200m, from prehistoric settlements and hafods to quarries and WWII air crash sites. This joint talk will showcase interesting findings and demonstrates how the Uplands Initiative increases our understanding of archaeology in the hills.

From the layby GR SO 841152 which is on the L 100m south of Craig y Nos Castle on the A4067.  A crossing of Pwll Pant Mawr to the Valley of the Afon Nedd and a return along Sarn Helen and country lanes visiting Henrhyd waterfall en route.

LIVELY AROUND THE COFFIN TRAIL.  9.00 am - 8.30 pm    34km (21 miles)  Strenuous
Meet at the Water Board Car Park in Llanddeusant GR SN 798238.  A long strenuous walk with 1800 metres of climb and some rivers to cross.  From Llanddeusant to Cwmgiedd, via Carreg Las, and back via Cribarth, Fan Hir, Fan Brycheiniog, Fan Foel and Bannau Sir Gaer.

From car park at head of Cwm Gwdi GR SO 024247. Up the wilderness of Cwm Sere with glorious views on a hidden route to join the path over Pen y Fan and Corn Du.  Back down across Cwm Llwch to Cwm Gwdi.

From the Castle Inn on the A479 at Pengenffordd GR SO 173295 (parking fee). Over the saddle at Mynydd Llysiau and Mcnamara's road into the Grwyne Fechan valley. Up to the Mynydd Du ridge which we follow to Pen y Gadair Fawr and Waun Fach, then down over the spectacular Dragon's Back. Over 1000m ascent in total.

From the Blaen Taf Fechan car park GR SO 036171, the route follows the ridge above Neuadd reservoir over Graig Fan Ddu, Corn Du, Pen y Fan (886m), Cribyn, Fan y Big to Bwlch y Ddwyallt. Thereafter continuing along to Carn Pica and returning via Cwar y Gigfran and Graig Fan Las. A classic day on the hill.

THE SHROPSHIRE HILLS, CHURCH STRETTON  20km (12 miles) Energetic  
Meet at Abergavenny station (parking fee) or in nearby streets at 9.15am for 9.28am train to Church Stretton. Group fares can apply.  Walk commences at 10.40 via Hope Bowdler Hill to the Lawley. Return along this ridge and Caer Caradoc for the return train at 16.04 which arrives back at Abergavenny at 17.11   Advisable to confirm train times with the leader.

STOREY ARMS TO LLANGYNIDR. 8.30am - 6.00pm 26km (16 miles) and approx 3000 ft of ascent Strenuous
Meet at CP opposite Llangynidr Village Hall, GR SO 155196, at 8.30am for transport by minibus to start (fare £6, payable on day). A linear walk covering much of day 4 of the Beacons Way, but 'downhill'. The route will be via Corn Du, Pen-y-Fan, Fan y Big, Craig y Fan Ddu, Pant y Creigiau, and an (optional) Tor y Foel to Llangynidr. The intention is to enjoy the views etc. rather than treat this walk as a yomp!

TWRCH Y TROT. 9.30am - 5.30pm 19km (12 miles) Strenuous
From the Water Board Car Park at GR SN 799 238.  Take the unclassified road which runs from Trecastle to the A 4069 between Llangadog and Brynaman.  
Follow signs to Llanddeusant, the Youth Hostel and Llyn y Fan Fach. A route down the head waters of the Twrch, and then back via the Bronze Age Burial Cairns 
on Carreg Las.

Park on the road along past the Gwyn Arms, off the A4067 at SN 8486 1707, for a walk over to Carreg yr Ogof (with interesting stream crossings), returning via the Carmarthen Fans ridgeline.

The following two walks are part of the Society's contribution to the Hay Festival and the European GeoParks Fortnight. They were arranged after the completion of the Spring Programme and therefore do not appear in the printed version of the programme.

Friday 30th May ..... Part of the Hay Festival
HAY BLUFF CIRCULAR. 9.30am - 3.30pm 14km (9 miles) Energetic
Meet at the top of Hay Car Park for a 9 mile walk up to the stone circle at Hay Bluff, returning via the Digedi Dingle. We will look at several old buildings and historical sites on the way. This is quite a strenuous walk so you need to be fit, but we will do the ascents at a leisurely pace. Please bring a packed lunch and drink, wear boots or sturdy footwear, and bring a waterproof coat.

Friday 30th May ..... Part of the European GeoParks Fortnight

CRACKED AND CRUMPLED. 10.00am - 5.00pm 12km (7.5 miles) Moderate 
Park (free) at The Angel Inn, Pontneddfechan SN900076, please park at the far end of the car park if possible.
This walk is part of the Society’s contribution to the Fforest Fawr Geopark programme for European Geoparks fortnight. An interpretive walk in the SW corner of the Waterfalls Country, exploring the scenery, geology and industrial remains around the ancient tear in the Earth’s crust known as the Neath Disturbance. The route takes in Craig y Ddinas, Cilhepste and Moel Penderyn, and passes near Sgwd yr Eira it has 350m of ascent with a few short steep/rough/slippy sections, mostly optional extras..

PANT Y LLYN LAKE AND HILL. 9.00am - 5.00pm 22km (14 miles) Energetic
Meet north of Upper Chapel on B4520 GR 021443 marked as “Griffin Inn” on map but now private house Explorer 188 Builth Wells. Park away from house please well onto verge as fast cars travel on the road. A lovely walk in a quiet little visited area taking in an idyllic lake
and following the Wye Valley Walk on return giving lovely views of Beacons and Black Mountains .
